Hyderabad, November 26: Hyderabad-based film-maker, academician and environmentalist, Shrenik Rao was today awarded with the prestigious Karmaveer Puraskar in New Delhi. The award was given to him for his selfless effort in trying to save the environment and rebuild nature.
Shrenik Rao is the Founder and Creative Director of Dolsun Media. He has worked across cultures and continents as an academic, broadcaster and a filmmaker. He created the environmental initiative, titled TreeCycle in support of United Nations Environment Programme’s Billion Tree Campaign. For this he cycled along the length of India for 4,100 Kms and raised a pledge of three million trees. Speaking on the occasion Mr Shrenik Rao said, “There is much that needs to be done – around the corner and around the world and also because, almost everyone – regardless of age, skills, income or social status, can do something positive for others by contributing towards the society and the environment. In the process, we will solve important problems facing the environment and hence humanity. I started my journey from Kanyakumari on June 5th which was the World Environment Day and I ended the cycle ride on August 15th in Kashmir. Each day of my journey was packed with surprises. I met many people who were passionate about nature and saving it for a better tomorrow”.
His documentary film titled Denied-This Bit of Truth, about the human rights abuse in Zimbabwe was featured on the BBC and was premiered at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government (USA) and also at the London School of Economics (UK). He has the credit of questioning several heads of states ranging from the Vice-Presidents of Zimbabwe - Ms.Joyce Mujuru and Mr. Joseph Msika to the Twenty First Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mir Zaffarullah Khan Jamali.
Academically, he specializes in Political Communication and Information Studies from the London School of Economics, UK and also in Anthropology from the University Of Hyderabad, India, for which he was awarded the University Gold Mdal and University Merit Sholarship for academic excellence.
The Karmaveer Puraskar is one of the highest-civilian honour’s given to individuals for their extra-ordinary contribution towards society.
